There have been many reports, and it has recently been acknowledged, that some of the Linksys cable routers do not work with BigPond cable broadband services. This is due to the unique 'heartbeat' that Telstra uses to verify end-to-end communication. Unfortunately, the Linksys routers do not respond to this heartbeart, and so the connection drops.
As yet, no firmware release has been scheduled to fix this problem, but there is a workaround.
Firstly, you should ensure that you're using the latest BigPond login client by checking here. Then you should ensure that this PC is using a static IP address, but not the same as the router (192.168.1.1 by default).
The router needs to be configured as normal, with an additional port-foward to port 5050. Here's how you do that:
- Log onto the router (http://192.168.1.1 by default)
- Go to the Advanced section
- The port range should be set as 5050 to 5050 and both TCP and UDP should be ticked
- Click apply to save the settings
Using the login client from the PC, you should now be able to access the Internet via your BigPond broadband service.
